Why is Gdańsk Airport named after Lech Wałęsa?

The airport has carried his name since May 2004, according to its operating company. Lech Wałęsa was a marine electrician at Gdańsk’s Lenin Shipyard who led the 1980 strike that won recognition for the independent Solidarity trade union, and he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for that campaign — Solidarity went on to win Poland’s first free elections in 1989, and Wałęsa was elected president the following year.

Which terminal do I fly from at Gdańsk — T1 or T2?

Accepted Answer

The airport does not publish an airline-by-terminal list, so check your boarding pass or booking. As a general pattern, T1 (opened 1997) mainly handles flights outside the Schengen area, while T2 (built for Euro 2012 and expanded twice since) mainly handles Schengen-area flights and carries the Executive Lounge, VIP area and the walk-through to the train platforms.

Is there a direct train from Gdańsk Airport into the city?

Accepted Answer

The station sits directly in front of Terminal 2, with a covered footbridge from inside the building, on the PKM (Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna) line, run by POLREGIO since 11 December 2022. Reaching central Gdańsk (Gdańsk Główny or Śródmieście) requires a change at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz; some services run direct to Sopot and Gdynia, and others toward Kartuzy and Kościerzyna in Kashubia.

I found a banned item in my hand luggage at security — do I have to throw it away?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Gdańsk Airport runs “Come Back to Me”, a parcel-locker storage service it describes as a world first: hand over the item at security, choose a 3, 7 or 15-day storage period (39, 49 or 69 PLN), and collect it later from the Cargo Terminal on Słowackiego Street — in person or by passing on your pick-up code.

Will I hear my flight called over the loudspeakers at Gdańsk?

Mostly no. Since 31 January 2025 Gdańsk has been a “silent airport”: general announcements were switched off, and only boarding, last call and gate-change messages are still read out — once, and only near the relevant gate. Watch the screens for your flight status instead.

What is the Tricity, and does the airport serve all of it?

Accepted Answer

Trójmiasto (the Tricity) is Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia together, and the airport’s own operating company is jointly owned by all three municipalities alongside the Pomeranian Voivodeship and Poland’s state airports enterprise. The PKM train and several ZTM bus lines connect the terminal to all three cities.
