Inside each terminal

Check-in, security, the station link and how to change terminals — verified against the airport's own pages.

Terminal 1

Sofia’s original passenger terminal, renovated in 2000: the departures hall was extended and a dedicated arrivals building added, on a 15,000 m² footprint designed for 1.8 million passengers a year. Built in the first half of the 20th century, it still carries its original character — wrought-iron chandeliers, natural-stone mosaics — which is what today’s low-cost and charter passengers see, by the former state operator’s own account. Avis’s own airport page calls it simply the “historic” building, against the “more modern” Terminal 2.

Terminal 2

The newer, larger terminal: it opened on 27 December 2006 with capacity for 2.6 million passengers a year, then was expanded north in December 2013 for roughly 200,000 more. The main building covers 56,850 m², with a 242 m passenger pier fitted with 7 jet bridges and bus gates; 12 lifts and 7 escalators serve its 8 levels, and a walkway links the halls to a covered car park of more than 800 spaces. Its retail zone tops 4,000 m² — restaurants, cafés, shops, travel and car-rental desks, banks and currency exchange — next to an automated baggage-sorting system with 4-stage security screening and 36 check-in desks.
