Getting around GAU
Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) is Assam’s largest airport and the principal gateway to India’s seven sister states in the North-East — the doorway pilgrims use for Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple and travellers use for Kaziranga National Park’s one-horned rhinos. It runs civil and military traffic off a single 3,110-metre runway and is operated by Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL), an Adani Airport Holdings subsidiary. A newly built integrated terminal began commercial operations on 22 February 2026, sharply expanding what the airport can handle: annual capacity rose to 13.1 million passengers across 21 domestic destinations and three international routes — Bangkok, Paro in Bhutan, and Singapore, flown in part by Bhutan’s own Druk Air. Traffic reached 6.57 million passengers over FY2024-25, a 7.7% climb, and the international side hit its highest count since Adani took over in 2021: 91,594 passengers.
