Inside each terminal

Check-in, security, the station link and how to change terminals — verified against the airport's own pages.

Terminal 1

Home to 26 of Hamburg’s roughly 55 airlines by the official directory, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and easyJet. The airport’s own facilities count gives it 50 check-in counters and 9 shops and restaurants, on top of what the shared Plaza offers both terminals.

Check-in

Check-in usually opens 2–3 hours before departure; some airlines allow evening-before check-in for flights leaving up to noon the next day. Twenty of the airport’s 30 self-bag-drop machines are in Terminal 1.

Security

The federal police run one central checkpoint for both terminals, in the Plaza between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (Level 1, open 3:30 a.m.–10:00 p.m. daily). Terminal 1 also has its own free Slot&Fly lane, bookable up to 72 hours ahead, entered to the right of the main security entrance.

From the train & tram station

The S-Bahn stop "Hamburg Airport (Flughafen)" is reachable directly from Terminal 1’s arrivals hall by lift, escalator or fixed stairs — the S1 runs to Hamburg Central Station every 10 minutes.

Accessibility

Mobility assistance is provided by Aviation & Airport Service (AAS) staff. Register through your airline or travel agency at least 48 hours ahead, and arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure; a PRM/family lane in the Plaza stays open for anyone who cannot use Slot&Fly.

Terminal 2

Home to 25 of Hamburg’s roughly 55 airlines, led by Lufthansa alongside British Airways, KLM, Air France, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air. The airport’s own count gives it 40 check-in counters and 6 shops and restaurants, plus rental-car counters on the arrivals level (Avis/Budget, Enterprise/Alamo, Europcar, Hertz, SIXT and others).

Check-in

Same 2–3-hour check-in window as Terminal 1; ten of the airport’s 30 self-bag-drop machines are here.

Security

The same shared checkpoint in the Plaza serves Terminal 2 — there is no separate security line for this building.

From the train & tram station

The S-Bahn stop is also reachable directly from Terminal 2’s arrivals hall by lift, escalator or fixed stairs.

Accessibility

The same AAS mobility service covers Terminal 2 — book it through your airline no later than 48 hours before travel, and plan to be at the airport two hours ahead of departure.
