Quito flew out of a downtown airport for 60 years before space and safety around a growing city forced a move. The new site opened in Tababela, a rural parish northeast of the capital, over one weekend in February 2013: the old airport closed on 19 February and this one started operations the next day. The old terminal became a public park rather than staying in aviation use.
